Say Anything Today, Tomorrow deny it!

U-TURN POLITICS

NOW, DOCTOR WHO EXAMINED ANWAR'S ACCUSER CANNOT BE CONTACTED
August 01, 2008

MAKE a statement or accusation today.
Then come back a few days later and deny it.

Welcome to the U-turn politics of Malaysia.
Each time an allegation is made in the highly tense political cauldron of Malaysia, those following the developments are left wondering when the denial is going to come.
In the past, it used to be one side making an allegation and another side denying it.
Now, the same side seems to be doing both.

First, we had private investigator P Balasubramaniam coming out with a statutory declaration linking Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak with murdered Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu.
Three days later, he retracted his claims in another sworn statement.
Then he and his family went into hiding. They are still missing.

MEDICAL REPORT DING-DONG
Earlier this week, a leaked medical report from a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur showed that a former aide of Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim had not been sodomised. He had earlier sought medical advice.

Mr Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan had filed a police report on 28Jun claiming that he was sodomised by the Malaysian opposition leader.
Yesterday, the hospital issued a statement saying that its medical officer, Dr Muhamad Osman Abdul Hamid, had examined Datuk Seri Anwar's accuser but not for sodomy.
Pusrawi Hospital said that Dr Muhamad Osman is a general practitioner at the hospital's accident and emergency clinic and not a specialist doctor.
The doctor is said to have gone on leave and, like the PI, cannot be contacted.
The hospital's medical director, Mr Kamaruddin Ahmad, admitted that the report 'looks genuine'.
But he said that a 'sodomy examination must be done by a specialist'.
On Tuesday, Mr Anwar urged the police to drop the investigation against him, claiming that the hospital medical report had found that Mr Saiful was not sodomised.

POLICE LATEST
In another twist, Malaysia's Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar yesterday released a statement rubbishing a news portal report under the heading 'Doctor on the run: Police want him to fabricate evidence against Anwar.'
The New Straits Times reported that the article stated that 'a certain doctor' from 'a certain hospital' examined Mr Anwar's former aide and found no evidence of his being sodomised.
It alleged that the police then detained the doctor for three days and tried to force him to change his report.
The police official said that the article was intended to skew public perception and undermine the police.
Where does this leave Mr Anwar as the U-turn politics takes another turn?
The man himself is worried.

ANWAR CONFIDENT, BUT...
He is confident of winning a by-election in the northern state of Kedah and even forming a new government.
But his worry is that he will be charged with sodomy.

'There are thousands of criminal cases not properly investigated. Why pursue this with zeal and in an unjust way? Is it because I will participate in a by-election?' Mr Anwar told reporters yesterday.

'You want me to withdraw? No. I will continue to pursue the change.

'Let's see if they want to charge me,' he said after being interviewed by Islamic syariah enforcement officials over the sodomy allegations.

The former deputy prime minister admitted that his family and friends will undergo the same suffering they experienced in 1998 if he is 'victimised, arrested and jailed'.
He has repeatedly said the allegations of sodomy, a repeat of charges that saw him jailed a decade ago, have been fabricated to block his plans to topple the ruling Barisan Nasional government.

SAIFUL WILL EMERGE: LAWYER
Yesterday, Mr Anwar's accuser, who continues to remain in hiding, issued a statement through his lawyer, Mr Zamri Idrus.
He called on Mr Anwar and the public not to interfere with the police investigations into the alleged sodomy case.

'I wish to state that there are no reasons for me to falsely accuse Anwar in this matter,' he said.

At a press conference yesterday, his lawyer said that Mr Saiful would come out of hiding soon. He would also publicly swear on the Quran that he was sodomised by Mr Anwar, but could not give a definitive date for this.
He said his client was waiting for the police to wrap up their probe before doing so, reported Malaysiakini.
His lawyer claimed that he was in constant contact with Mr Saiful and that his client was still in Malaysia and is being financially supported by his father.

'Saiful is still under police protection. He made the request (for protection) earlier.'

'He is worried about his safety... His movements are not restricted by the police,' he said.
